Death Camp Fantasy

Plotted by our friend Wilson in his pajamas after a night of camping, he sent us off on one of those fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants kind of rides.

What ensued was a ramble bamble that pushed us to our limits and hopefully pushes you to yours. The terrain out here is rough and unkempt. Rocks the size of your head regularly poke themselves free of the dirt and you can hear them kissing rim quite often.

The climb up to Bald Knob is a long but manageable journey. The undulating terrain over Tomahawk Mountain is equal parts beautiful and rugged. Stop at Skidmore Lake for a refreshing dip and refill before climbing up to Slate Springs Mountain. This chunky climb is the most difficult section of the ride. Low gears and high volume tires will save your butt. I’ve done this on a 38x42 low gear and it was a spicy burn.

Death Camp Fantasy is one of the most beautiful ways to experience this area. The hidden ridge-line double track left my jaw dropped several times. I hope it will leave you physically shelled and overjoyed with emotion!

Bring your water filter and plenty of food. We when did this route in October, we were scrambling for water! Fill up when you can.

I’d recommend 40mm wide tires or larger. A nice hardtail wouldn’t be a bad idea!
