Toughest Year Ever

TYE. Toughest Year Ever. It’s hard to beat this one in get-out-thereability.

Starting at Tye River Park in Massie’s Mill this little journey will take you pretty far out into the middle of nowhere. No cell reception. No convenience stores. Just lots of dirt and elevation.

Mile per mile this route is one of the most beautiful, difficult and rewarding rides in the area. You’ll get sustained climbs of 45 minutes to an hour long, long, ripping descents that seem to go on forever. You’ll want them to be over when your neck is done taking the abuse!

This is also one of the most modular routes out there. Below you’ll find three adaptable routes to varying degrees of difficulty. 50 mile, 65 mile and 80 mile options taking you between 6,000 and nearly 10,000ft of elevation. Each one of them ending with the most enjoyable 20 miles that you’ll find in the area. The final descent is unbeatable and the detour through the orchard is a hidden treasure.

Regarding the orchard cut-through; I’m not sure of the public use of this path but I’d bet it is off limits. I wouldn’t stop anywhere along this section to take pictures or gawk at the scenery. Just ride through and don’t make any noise. I’ve ridden past the owners of the home at the very end of this section many a time and they’ve never said anything to me about not riding there. Their little pups will give chase, however! If you wish to skip this section you can continue down the highway that you were initially on and that will take you all the way to the start.

Bigger tires are recommended for this one. The descents are too fun. 40mm is the sweet spot. No road bikes! 35mm minimum. Bring a water filter and enough food to last you all day! No resupply points on this big billy!
