Tank’s King & Queen
If you’ve been browsing this little library of routes this long and you’re not quite feeling the idea of climbing ten thousand feet of mountain groads or spending the whole dang day on your bike, Tank’s King & Queen might be the dirt excursion you need.
There are those days when you want to get out of town on an adventure, but maybe the weather just doesn’t look cooperative out West in the land of chunder. Behold! Venture Eastward towards Virginia’s Middle Peninsula. Your luck may shine like the treasures of the coast.
Fellow gravel grouser Chris Tank drew this little beauty up out in King & Queen county, the land of never ending hunt clubs and Tidewater forests. Out here you won’t find excruciating climbs nor wild descents. Just a gentle caress of dirt and sand, winding in and out of loblolly pine forests and beaver ponds.
One of the last dirt sectors (mi 51) on this route does require a quick bit of trespassing. The gates are usually open, but if not, take heed. It is one of the more exciting bits of the route so try to hit it!
No serious provisions needed on this route. You can make do with two large bottles of water and a small bag of snacks! You’ll pass by several churches on this route. Whether or not they feel like turning their water spigots on for you is another story, however.
There are two churches and one public school near the start of the route. Park at whichever one looks empty that day!
30mm tire minimum when dry. 33mm tire with a little tread recommended when things are damp.
