The Sherhambra Figure 8
A banger of a ride covering some the area’s biggest climbs and descents, one after another. You’ll hit Vesuvius, Alhambra, Irish Creek and Campbell’s Mountain all in one go. The climbs are tough but the descents are the reward.
Bring a water filter and plenty of food. There are no resupply stations on this route and you’ll be riding for about 7 hours.
Once you enter the Sherando area, turn down Coal Rd. and find a place to pull off to start the journey.
You’ll be chauffeured through an apple orchard after the first descent. It’s a little unclear whether or not we’re supposed to be there so just don’t linger around too long. Blast right through and watch out for the dogs near the exit.
40mm wide tires are recommended. Something with a smooth center like the Donnelly X’Plor MSO WC are great. You’ll be grateful for some tire volume on the chunky descents. You can leave the real chunky tires at home though. There’s enough pavement on this ride to complete it on something like the Bon Jon Pass.
