The Diamond Cutter
Crozet! A diamond in the rough! This time we head to the North where elevations pitch sharply and the cattle are aplenty.
This route is characterized by the sharp climb at the top of the map where you’ll gain 2,000ft of your total elevation for the day. Bring them low gears! Just when you think you’re at the top you will be sent gently down only to be pushed even further to the top.
We have a new surprise in the area for this route. Around mile 40 there is a new market for provisions. Normally I would suggest bringing a water filter on this ride but alas! No longer! Stock up at this place once you’ve descended Wyatt Mountain. They have hot coffee, made to order sandwiches and cookies galore.
This ride is solidly 65% off road. The gravel you’ll encounter will range from mild to spicy, so a bigger tire is nice. 35mm wide should be the minimum for enjoyment, 40mm is perfect. I’ve seen folks do this on road bikes however, whilst suffering a few flats along the way. The steep climb up Wyatt Mountain won’t be possible due to tire slippage. A little tread goes a long way.
