RIO Speedwarden
Years ago we set out on a killer ride north of Wardensville with the Bluemont Connection crew. What ensued was super enjoyable day out on highly varied terrain. There may have been a chicken murder on one of the descents but otherwise a full spectrum gravel adventure that ticked all the boxes.
When we went back a year or two later, some things weren’t the same. Did I grab the wrong gpx file? Were some roads closed off? I don’t know, but we had to pivot and trust the little lines on our Garmins to get through this one. There is a bit of ambiguous road poaching on this route but if you follow the line, you’ll get out in one piece.
At one point your road will disappear and the route will dump you out into someone’s backyard as you head back towards the public road. Be quiet and respectful and maybe play dumb if someone asks you what you’re doing riding out of the woods in fluorescent spandex.
Make a point to eat at Mac’s Bingo for a luxurious post-ride meal. It’s kind of the whole reason to come out to Wardensville!
I’d recommend 38mm minimum on this route.
